    Description

Vintage original 27 x 41 in. US one-sheet poster from the 1940s mystery thriller,
    GASLIGHT
(AKA Angel Street), released in 1940 and
    directed by Thorold Dickinson
. Based upon the stage play by Patrick Hamilton, twenty years after the murder of Alice Barlow, her house is finally occupied again. However, the husband from the couple who have moved in has a secret which he will do anything to keep hidden. The cast includes Anton Walbrook, Diana Wynyard, Robert Newton, Frank Pettingell, and Cathleen Cordell.
This poster was printed for the film's original US theatrical release in 1952, where it was released as
    Angel Street
. Unrestored and folded as originally issued, it is in good- condition only as shown with separation on the top and left edge of the bottom right panel.
When MGM remade the film with Charles Boyer and Ingrid Bergman, the studio attempted to have all prints of this earlier version destroyed. Fortunately, several prints escaped the fire (in fact, it is believed that director Thorold Dickinson surreptitiously struck a print himself before the negative was lost).
The original play, "Gas Light," opened in London on 31 January 1939.
The play opened in New York with the title changed to "Angel Street" on 5 December 1941, starring Vincent Price (his first role as a villain) and Judith Evelyn. Leo G. Carroll co-starred as Rough. It became the longest-running melodrama in Broadway history, playing for 1,293 performances.
